Glenn Gould, Pianist & Composer

I believe that the justification of art is the internal combustion it ignites in the hearts of men and not its shallow, externalized, public manifestations. The purpose of art is not the release of a momentary ejection of adrenaline but is, rather, the gradual, lifelong construction of a state of wonder and serenity.

Glenn Gould opportunity to examine that condition of solitude which is neither exclusive to the north nor the prerogative of those who go north but which does, perhaps, appear... a bit more clearly to those who have made, if only in their imagination, the journey north.

Nowhere in my 10-year-long research did Asperger's disorder come even close to being considered as a differential diagnosis among Gould' s complex diagnostic formulation.

Canadian pianist Glenn Gould was renowned both for his fantastic talent and for deeply eccentric habits such as rocking back and forth during recitals, humming loudly and conducting the music to himself.
David Ljunggren
One of Glenn's most prominent complaints was a fear of being too cold. He refused common-sense advice regarding proper hygiene, diet, and physical exercise. He had little respect for the side-effects of drugs.
Peter Ostwald
Press release for The Person Within, which defines emotional abuse of children with disabilities, discusses its consequences, and offers recommendations for avoiding it and remedying its effects. Production of the BC Institute Against Family Violence.
Tracey Moropito
Even as a child Glenn was isolated because he was working like hell to be a great man. He had a tremendous feeling and loving affection for music... It was an utter, complete feeling. He knew who he was and where he was going.
When Gould was alive, it is unlikely that anyone who knew of his behavior would have thought he had signs of an autism spectrum disorder because so little was known about autism at that time.
He adored Arrowroot cookies, Barbra Streisand and animals. He abhorred sunlight, the stage and airplanes. Eccentric, genius, solitary, head-strong, hypochondriac, virtuoso.. (Links to radio broadcasts and television programs.)

The constant humming, the feverish conducting and fanatical fear of germs are eccentricities that define Glenn Gould as much as his Goldberg Variations. Years after the musician's death, Gould's unusual behavior continues to be a source of intrigue.
Peter Mansbridge, Adrienne Arsenault
A boy huddled in thick coats like blankets eludes his friends. He has nothing in common with their antics. He has experienced their gentle jibes and misunderstandings. Don't touch me, he thinks, I'm different.
B.W. Powe
Gould was a man of contradictions. His behavior could sometimes be off-putting, but he was well-spoken, genteel and highly intelligent. Almost anything you could say about Glenn Gould you could say the opposite and have it be somewhat true.
